Happy Songkran: a Kan Toke Feast!
April 16th, 2012 in: Happenings, ObsessionsYesterday marked the third and final day of Songkran, the Thai new year festival. I had the pleasure of celebrating the new year at a private luncheon in the library of Soho House, hosted (and sous-chefed) by James Murphy and Christina Topsøe and prepared by Kris Yenbamroong of Night + Market in Los Angeles. Kris prepared a Kan Toke feast, a Northern Thai-style of dining based around large platters consisting of various individual components. We had Tam Kanoon- jackfruit salad- with Sai Krok Isan – sour fermented sausages with ginger, bird eye chile and peanuts. Nam Prik Noom relish with Kaeb Moo pork rinds and Sai Uah- herb sausages. Moo Sadoong – aka startled pig – was grilled with basil, lemongrass and fish sauce. Cold briny oysters paired perfectly with the outrageously spicy Yum Naem Kao Tod – crispy rice salad. Northern-style Larb Lanna – ground pork salad and raw cabbage and chilled cucumbers went with just about everything. Milky Kao Niew Moon – sweet coconut sticky rice kept the spicy heat in check. We washed it all down with icy Sauvignon Blanc and cold Thai beers. According to Kris, if his restaurant had a mission statement, it would read: “We aim to make the most delicious and authentic Thai food to facilitate drinking and having fun amongst friends.” Mission accomplished!
Talking Knots: Clara Claus
April 11th, 2012 in: Happenings, ObsessionsClara Claus, our dear friend and regular Bird customer (note the Acne dress and wedges), has filled the 7th floor gallery of The Cooper Union with her lush abstract paintings and minimal white plaster and wood sculptures for her senior thesis show Talking Knots. She has also highlighted her process for the viewer who can follow the simple black paint stroke from the gallery wall, down the hall, down the stairs, down another hall to the artists’s studio, the painting building and gaining color and volume as it goes. Thru Saturday, April 14th, 7 east 7th Street, 7th floor.
