NYFW SS13 Wednesday: Whit, Rachel Comey, Tanya Taylor, The Sartorialist
Technically New York Fashion Week (NYFW from here on) starts today, but a few of my favorite designers and the inimitable Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist, got a jump on the gun yesterday. I love the energy and back-to-school excitement that pervades the September shows. I love seeing old friends, chatting about summer fun, and looking at gorgeous, fresh, bright and light spring dresses, shorts, skirts and perfectly cut little jackets. Inspired by the designer’s honeymoon to St. Lucia, Whit was easy breezy with tons of color, island floral prints, cabana stripes, and pops of hot pink. Rachel Comey showed a grown-up glamor for spring. Intricate embroidery on cocktail-worthy dresses were a new direction, but they were balanced by classic Comey menswear inspired trousers, shorts and jackets in rich, textural fabrics. Bright blue, persimmon red and a touch of acid yellow stood out from the neutral flesh tones and subtle camo and floral prints. Loved the new sunglasses collaboration with Prism. Who doesn’t want to match their dress to their glasses?! And I will certainly be rocking the silver metallic leather ankle boots. Afterwards I made my way up to the Danziger Gallery to preview the Coach-sponsored opening exhibit of Scott Schuman’s new show, supporting his book launch. I chatted with the extremely charming James Danziger about up-and-coming international photographers, while sipping champagne and taking in the sartorially-inclined. Then off to MoMA (catching a lift with my new friend Claudia Wu of Me magazine) to see what all the buzz is about surrounding newcomer Tanya Taylor. I can’t deny that the venue (the museum’s first ever fashion presentation) heightened the anticipation. After a considerable wait in the entrance lobby, the lucky masses were shown into the main atrium to see the feminine, chic 60s-inspired gorgeous second collection of Ms. Taylor. Inspired by the Sandy Lane hotel in Barbados (where her wedding will take place next spring) the collection was full of re-worked vintage florals, shoulder-slung jackets, cropped trousers and A-line shifts perfect for city strolling or poolside lounging, albeit very glamorous poolside lounging. Now if I could just decide which Island to fly off to…..
